The WSTA's latest report produced by Cebr showcases the significant contribution wine and spirit industry makes to the UK economy. The report highlights the industry’s resilience post-COVID but it faces the continued challenges of cost pressures.
Economic Contribution of Wine and Spirit Industry - Overview
- In 2022 the wine and spirit industry contributed £76.3bn in economic activity
- The sector generated £22.6bn in Gross Value Added to the economy - 46% comes from the on-trade:
- Wine sector generated £8.9bn in GVA
- Spirit sector generated £13.7bn in GVA
- It supported over 413k jobs in the UK - 62% in the on-trade.
- 219k FTE jobs in spirits
- 193k FTE jobs in wine
- UK the 2nd largest importer for wines globally:
- The number of still wine and sparkling bottles imported in 2022 was the equivalent to 1.7bn bottles (75cl) - with 87% of it still wine.
- 493 million litres of imported wine was bottled in the UK, equivalent to around 657m bottles (75cl), which was more than Bordeaux’s production in 2022**.
- UK exported wine* was the equivalent to 44 million bottles with 2.6m being sparkling wine.
- UK the largest exporter for spirits globally:
- The number of spirit bottles (70cl) exported in 2022 was the equivalent to 1.8 billion bottles with 77% being whisky.
- UK imported spirit was the equivalent to around 386 million bottles.
