Villa Bogdano 1880: an Epigenetic Journey of Tocai Friulano
March 24 @ 14:00 - 15:30
A Masterclass tasting hosted by Sarah Abbott MW & Domenico Veronese focusing on ‘Unlocking Tocai Friulano’s Potential: An Epigenetic Journey’.
The 185 hectare estate is home to 106 ha of vines, 18 ha of which are considered historic vineyards. The vast majority of Villa Bogdano 1880’s old vines were planted between 1943 and 1960.
The oldest plot consists of 117 Tocai Friulano (known locally as Tai) vines dating back to the late 19th century, which were meticulously restored by one of Italy’s leading viticulturists: Professor Carlo Petrussi. These ancient vines, planted using the “Cassone Padovano” training method developed by Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages, are of significant historical and viticultural interest. This technique was employed to control the production and enhance the quality of this otherwise vigorous varietal.
At this masterclass guests will have the very first chance to taste the bottling of a microvinification of these 117 ancient vines, which produced only 300 bottles and 11 magnums in the 2020 vintage.
This micro-vinification, which is yet to be named, marks the beginning of a broader project to study how old vines and specific terroir are reflected in a wine’s profile.
