Beyond the Bottle: The Reality of Alcohol Fraud

The aim is to help members think realistically about the threats to their business and develop a probing culture, where they feel comfortable reporting issues to regulators and law enforcement.

We’ll start by hearing from an academic researcher, whose doctoral work was on barriers to reporting fraud and other crimes. Dr Kay Linnell heard from members of the wine trade during her research. This is to help members think about the attitudes and processes in their own business that might get in the way of reporting suspicions or blatantly criminal activity.

We are going to invite some members to talk about their own experiences, including the financial and reputational damage, and what they have done to mitigate these risks in future.

We will also have a look at the work the WSTA did a few years ago with some major brand owners to develop a playbook to manage counterfeiting cases, and how this might be expanded to meet other threats.
