Australia’s old vine heritage

April 8 @ 11:00 - 13:00

The Institute of Masters of Wine, with the support of Wine Australia and moderator Sarah Abbott MW, invite you to a special masterclass with Andrew Caillard MW and Dr Angus Hughson highlighting Australia’s old vine legacy and modern vision.

Although it is well known that Australia possesses some of the oldest vitis vinifera vineyards in the world, the extent of pre-phylloxera plantings in the form of surviving old vines and genetic vinestock across the country is little understood. Andrew Caillard MW’s three-volume – The Australian Ark – a history of Australian wine 1788-2023 – explores the transmission of vinestock material from the earliest importations and brings new insights that may change perspectives and inspire new outlooks towards Australian wine. This fine-wine tasting, sourced from many of Australia’s premier wine regions, will highlight one of the key foundations of the country’s fine wine ambitions.
